I’m considering buying an apartment in Phuket to spend a few months a year there, and maybe rent it out when I’m away. Is that a realistic plan, or is the market too crowded?

It’s totally doable — I bought a 1-bedroom in Rawai in 2022 and it’s been working well for part-time living and rental. Apartments in Phuket range a lot in price and quality, but if you stick to developed areas like Kata, Kamala, or Rawai, you’ll find fully managed buildings with pools, gyms, and rental services. I paid about $92,000 for a 48 m² unit with partial sea view and access to a rooftop pool. When I’m not there, the management company handles short-term bookings through Airbnb. It doesn’t make me rich, but it covers most of the costs. Just make sure you understand Thai ownership laws (foreigners can buy condos but not land) and check building licenses. But for a “lock and leave” lifestyle and some rental income, it’s definitely realistic.
